What is Therapeutic Play?

For children, play is a natural language (Garry Landreth). While adults often express themselves through conversation, children communicate their thoughts, feelings, and experiences through play, creativity, and movement.

Therapy using play  provides a safe, supportive space where children can explore emotions, process difficult experiences, build coping skills, and strengthen self-confidence using developmentally appropriate activities.

Sessions may include toys, imaginative play, art, music, movement, storytelling, sand, games, or other creative experiences that allow children to express themselves in ways that words alone often cannot. These mediums allow children to express themselves in developmentally appropriate ways while creating a safe distance from difficult thoughts, feelings, and experiences, making them easier to explore and understand.

Each session is tailored to your child's unique needs. Sometimes children lead the play as they work through experiences at their own pace, while other times the therapist gently introduces activities that support specific therapeutic goals.

Play therapy is more than "just playing." It is an evidence-informed approach that helps children develop emotional regulation, resilience, problem-solving skills, healthy relationships, and a greater understanding of themselves—all within the safety of a trusting therapeutic relationship.
